The “broccolo fiolaro” is a typical crop of the Creazzo hills – Vicenza area, its name derived from the several sprouts along the stalk of the plant, which in Venetian dialect are called “fioi”, or offspring. It is a product that is particular in that it does not have the typical taste or shape of other varieties of broccoli and is rich in vitamins, mineral salts and calcium. The cultivation of this Fiolaro broccoli dates back to ancient Roman times. Every beginning of the year the town of Creazzo run a winter local Festival or sagra celebrating and promoting the broccolo fiolaro broccoli and its culinary delights. They set up a big booth where the food makes focus on the delicious local broccoli. Find out more details about the 2019 ed. of this Festival here. MoreTweet MoreTweet
Name origin The meaning of the name “Mossano” is still discussed. Some think the name has an erudite origin from the Latin mons sanus (healthy mountain), others believe it comes from the Latin personal name Mussius, yet both explanations lack substantial proofs. It is more likely that the origin of this name be some non-Latin word, like muzzus, that describes some characteristics of the local landscape. History The steep, cave-scattered, sun-exposed slopes provided ideal living areas for man since the Paleolithic Era. In Mossano traces of prehistoric living have been found in two caves: S. Bernardino’s and Paina Caves. Archaeological enquiries have been carried out in these two caves for more then 30 years by scholars of the renowned Paleontology Department of the Science Faculty of Ferrara University, first under the surveillance of Professor Pietro Leonardi, and lately under that of Professor Alberto Broglio. A hearth discovered in S. Bernardino’s cave had scholars to move back of 20.000 years the start fire-using by men, and the oldest examples of hearth-related industry has been named bernardinian, because of the ground-breaking discoveries made in this Berici Hills site. But there’s more then just prehistoric facts about S. Bernardino’s Cave: the cave was […] MoreTweet
Year 1263, in Bolsena in Central Italy, a Bohemian priest (whom tradition calls Peter of Prague), saw a host bleed several drops of blood while he was saying mass, a miracle that put an end to his doubts about the transubstantiation of the bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ. A year later, to commemorate the event, Pope Urban IV established the feast of Corpus Domini, which is celebrated on the Thursday after the Octave of Pentecost, “making universal” a practice that he had already seen and admired in Flanders. Unfortunately, the Pope died that year and his successors did not promote the feast as actively, interrupting its observance for about forty years. This is why it is not mentioned in the Vicenza Statutes of 1264 but it appears in the Statutes of 1311, when it was decreed that “Every year there will be a solemn feast on that day to honor and venerate the Most Holy Sacrament with a solemn procession of all the clergy, the guilds and the arts, which must attend with their insignia, pallium and lit candles. The colleges of judges and notaries must also attend, with their multicolored hoods and a […] MoreTweet
What should we do in case of a dental trauma? When you have young children, the falls that happen during any active type of play, or to kids who have just started walking, can sometimes lead to tooth injuries. When an accident occurs, don’t worry- most times a tooth that’s been knocked out can be completely saved if proper care is taken in the first 20 minutes. Reason why it is important to keep calm and know few notions on first aid, so that we are able to block bleeding until we reach the hospital or the pedodontist – the dentist specialized in children treatments. Read here the advice of the Centro Ortodontico Vicentino Orthodontic Center on what we should do. The Centro Ortodontico Vicentino Orthodontic Center is part of the Dentisti Vignato Dental Clinic located in Vicenza. MoreTweet MoreTweet
BAM!, the European gathering of bike travelers, the largest event dedicated to bicycle tourism in Europe, returns to Mantua, from the 17th to the 19th of May 2019. Italy’s monuments and must-sees are well known to most travelers in the world. The historic streets of Florence, Rome’s Coliseum, the canals of Venice, Pisa’s leaning tower, and the rocky cliffs of Cinque Terre; we’ve seen pictures of them and we’ve all daydreamed about them. But the truth is, while most people flock to these well-established sites, they are leaving a huge chunk of the country unexplored. We’ve teamed up with the travel experts at AllTheRooms to compile a list of the best spots in Italy that are venture off the normal tourist route. Pisciotta About two hours south of popular destinations Pompeii and Naples sits Pisciotta, just inland from the country’s western coastline. According to lore, many claim Trojans escaping the sacking of Troy founded the small town of only about 2,500 inhabitants. Nowadays, the attractive little town on a hill is sometimes overlooked. A town this pretty and accessible, just off a national highway, can’t stay secret forever. Those who do end up in the sun-stained village will […] MoreTweet
In the summer of 2018 I was with some friends from our group Vicenza Women of Color (VWOC) thinking about how 2018 was the year of the woman and how could we showcase that here in Vicenza. So we decided to have a photography exhibit in the city of Vicenza showcasing Women/Mothers/Soldiers, we called it Woman Warriors. All models and photographers were from the Vicenza Military Community (VMC). To see pics from our past event then click here. So as we are about to start Women’s History Month the VWOC and USAG Italy is pleased to present the Italian premiere of Women Warriors Part 2 Photographic Exhibition. Six new artists from the Vicenza Military Community have been selected to exhibit their photographs and they are Karina Cazares Cantu, Maria Di Bianca Cavins (Photo credit for picture above), Andrew Peck, Sarah Elizabeth Romero, Giuliana Gabriela Swenson and Isabel Wigger. Taking the theme of Women Warriors each artist celebrates what that means to them. They investigate themes of beauty, power, strength, and the duality of a Mother-Soldier role. They give voice to the everyday heros who keep their families together through daily challenges, while maintaining their focus to fulfill their military mission. From […] MoreTweet

On the current jerseys of L.R. Vicenza Virtus, the main football or calcio professional team of the city of Vicenza, as well as in its new official logo, it is easily identifiable a big “R”. But what does it stand for? The great “R” and the letters L.R. are a reminder and a tribute to the Lanificio Rossi of Schio (later just “Lanerossi”). The company, founded in 1817 in the town of Schio – VI, became the largest Italian textile industry of the twentieth century. In June 1953, Lanerossi acquired the Vicenza football club, effectively transforming it into his own company division. Since then and until 1990 the team was called “Lanerossi Vicenza”, always wearing on the shirt the characteristic “R”, logo of the textile company. The letter was made by a single rolled and sewn fabric tape. That explains its peculiar shape. In July 2018, after the club’s acquisition by Renzo Rosso (founder of DIESEL, a global clothing company based in Breganze – VI), Lanerossi’s R became once again the cornerstone of the club’s symbolism. Personally, we’re crazy about that “R”. GO LANE! MoreTweet MoreTweet
The “Presepe” or “Presepio” is truly a piece of Italy’s tradition and heritage as well as the “Presepio Vivente” living nativity scene. The Christmas re-enactment takes to the streets with human performers costumed as Joseph and Mary, the Magi, the shepherds, artisans and more. Recreating the entire village of times gone. Many Southern Italian town has a living tableau that retells the story of that heralded night in Bethlehem. Some of the best are in Greccio (Rieti province), Custonaci (Trapani province) and Matera. But even the north side of Italy hosts some beautiful Live Christmas crèches like the one of San Biagio (Mantova province), Dogliani (Cuneo province) and Villaga (Vicenza province, the next Presepio Vivente di Villaga will be set on Dec. 2019). → Here a list of upcoming Living Nativity Scenes staged in and around Vicenza. The existence and importance of the terrazzamenti terracing (or dry walls) in Italy is attested ever since the Neolithic Age and is well documented from the Middle Ages onward. Contour terraces and regular terraces remained in use until the second postwar period, because sharecropper contracts guaranteed their constant maintenance. Terraces were thus a regular feature of many hill and mountain landscapes in Italy, as well as in many southern European countries. Italian agriculture has suffered a progressive decline that began 60 years ago. This phenomena has been even more evident in terraced landscapes, since they are less convenient and less remunerative to cultivate. Although they have a historical and aesthetic significance, and are a resource for agriculture and tourism, they are also a challenge for land conservation and management. Fortunately there are currently several projects in Italy to reclaim these important artifact, one of those is the Associazione Adotta un terrazzamento in Canale di Brenta APS or “Adopt a terrace in the River Brenta Valley”. Their committee mediates between the landowners, presently abroad or unable to take care of the terraces, and mountain-lovers interested in supporting their conservation. The project started after some experiences of ‘terrace adoption’ had occurred spontaneously […] MoreTweet
With dental aesthetics you will rediscover the pleasure of smiling because we design the smile together with you. The Vignato’s dentists listen to your needs and desires and translate them into what they do best: create a harmonious smile that is beautiful to look at as well as to wear. Aesthetic veneers, crowns, composites, dental whitening, orthodontics: each mouth has its own specific project. With dental veneers they have changed the face of many patients’ smiles! Dr. Costantino Vignato, when do you recommend the use of veneers? It is an aesthetic intervention that allows you to significantly improve the harmony of the smile by erasing unsightly stains and irregularities in the shape of teeth. With dental veneers we can also close too large spaces between teeth or correct the smile in case of bad positioned or too shorts teeth. How does it work? ✔The procedure used to place veneers is minimally invasive and requires a small amount of enamel be removed for them to fit. ✔We then proceed by taking of the impressions that will be used for the construction of the personalized veneers. ✔The patient will return for a second session in which we will proceed with the cementation […] MoreTweet
Looking for something to do this month? Did you know this month US Americans celebrate Black History? So Vicenza Women of Color are back with NOIR Warriors which displays the talent of seven local American artists and highlights the diversity of the Vicenza Military Community. The exhibit is organized by Vicenza Women of Color and co-sponsored by U.S. Army Garrison Italy. The purpose of this exhibition is to showcase the diversity and professionalism of African American Soldiers, civilians and their families. These individuals work tirelessly behind the scenes in support of our service members and their families. Black History Month started as an annual celebration to remember our important leaders, educators, scientist, and creatives that have made significant contributions to US country and culture. Their extraordinary minds and visions have helped shape and define events that have played a major role in US history. Photographers Robert P. Wormley, Candice Bassett, Christina M. Bhatti, Claire Wiltse, and Sabriana R. Castles can be some of the most fascinating places to visit. Because of their history, unique architectural structure, and often unusual furnishings, they make for a great visit whether you’re a history buff, a fairytale lover, or just someone who loves all things medieval. And let’s be honest, Europe has no shortage of castles or history. In fact, we are lucky to be living within a short distance of an abundance of castles, fortresses, and noble villas. I’ve put together a list of some pretty great castle recommendations amongst the provinces of Vicenza, Padova, Verona, and Treviso, just to name a few. This is by no means an exhaustive list because it would take months to visit all of the castles in those areas! But here is a list of places to start if you’re into castle exploring! These sites make for a great day trip, a romantic getaway, or a nearby place to take your friends and family when they come to visit! To provide a bit of historical context, “castle” comes from the Latin word “castellum,” meaning fortress. Castles were often used as homes or residences of nobles, and to protect territories or even whole cities. And it […] MoreTweet
Vicenza Women of Color are at it again with another Photo Exhibition with the help of Caserma Pride. We are doing an exhibit of photography called “Pride Warrior” which will be on display at a local art gallery in downtown Vicenza. This exhibition allows us to display the beauty and diversity of LGBTQ service members along with their friends and families who support them. Each of our photographers consider gender and sexual identity an important and personal subject, so this event will also be an opportunity to shed light on part of our community that is often marginalized and underrepresented by the media. Organized by the Vicenza Women of Color and co-sponsored by Caserma Pride (local base pride chapter), the exhibit will showcase the photographers Maria di Bianca Cavins, Guiliana Gabriela Swenson, Darian Matthews, and Neika M. Smith – four American artists from the local Vicenza Military Community. Their work focuses on LGBTQ military (active and veterans), students, and local Vicenza Italian residents. This exhibit examines pride from a different perspective and commemorates LGBTQ history. It also provides a moment to celebrate the accomplishments of those who blazed the trail that made it possible to express sexual and gender identities openly and publicly. This is a journey worth sharing daily. […] MoreTweet

The month of February occupies a specific state of mind for many of us. February is situated almost smack dab in the middle of winter. The days are short and the nights are long. It is a time to cozy up with a warm blanket, a good book, or a long Netflix queue. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season has faded away and we naturally settle into routine and hibernation mode. Here at The Vicenza Women of Color (VWOC), February represents an exciting time of commemoration of Black heritage. February is a celebration of our Black pioneers both past and present. It is a remembrance of all who have gone before us and paved the way to our success with their blood, determination, and dedication. We give tribute to the multitude of scientific and cultural innovations that have been made by Black people, and continue to this day. We are proud to share this cultural holiday with our adopted Italian community. It is our hope to build meaningful lasting friendship with our neighbors and give them some insight into our heritage. That is why in celebration of Black History Month VWOC and USAG Italy are hosting a open […] MoreTweet

The sun is shining high above the Northern Italian region of Veneto. It’s hot and all I have eyes for is the blue swimming pool sparkling right in front of me. “Come,” it says, “take a dip. The water is lovely!” And so too is the scenery. Right behind the pool stands a carefully restored early 17th century manor house – all high arches and a square turret. Its yellow bricks are emphasised by the green rolling hills which serve as a perfect backdrop. By the fence, the purple blooms of a huge wisteria swish in the gentle breeze and in the garden classical statues peek behind rose bushes which are about to bloom. Murano Glass: a story of traditions Glass has been produced in Murano since 13th century. The story of Murano glass is a story of effort, passion and tradition: ever since then, glass masters have been dedicating their lives to improve blown glass-making techniques and to create new objects that are real pieces of art. Nowadays, Murano glass is still famous and loved all over the world and it surely represents one of the best gifts to bring home after a trip to Venice. But where should we buy Murano glass to be sure it’s original? Real or Fake: Murano Glass in Venice Venice shops are full of imitations, especially when talking about Murano glass. But why do people buy fake Murano glass instead of original Murano glass? The answer to this question it’s easier than it looks: people don’t know. That’s because people usually cannot recognize original Murano glass especially if they are tourists, and are tricked into buying fake Murano glass without even knowing. But there is a solution. Murano Glass Trademark of Origin The solution I’ve just mentioned is the Murano Glass Trademark of origin, which was created in 1994. It’s a small adhesive label that has an […] MoreTweet

Mercato degli agricoltori or mercato dei contadini or again mercato di campagna amica: Farmers Market Mercatino dell’antiquariato: Antique Market This post focuses on the mercati settimanali weekly town markets. “Trade” in public areas has been a living and consolidated reality for centuries throughout Italy. Over the years, in addition to the markets of the oldest traditions, more have been added to squares and other places of aggregation as well as in fractions or in smaller towns. These markets also represent a significant moment of social life, relationship and contact between the locals, often contributing to the enhancement and redevelopment of abandoned areas or degraded neighborhoods. Town markets usual hours are about 0830-1230. Vendors sell food (mainly fresh / local fruits and vegetables) home goods, and clothing. To follow some of the main town markets of the Vicenza area where many members of the Vicenza Military Community live. Not many people living in Vicenza know that “The Supper of St Gregory the Great” (1572), masterpiece of Paolo Caliari known as Paolo Veronese, is hanging on the rear wall of the ancient refectory of the Church of Monte Berico. It’s a big oil painting on canvas measuring 8,78 x 4,44 meters. The painting—now restored—bears the signs of breakage. On June 10, 1848 the painting was cut into 32 pieces by Austrian soldiers, in the context of the Italian First War of Independence. On 2014—facing the original opera, in the opposite wall—the video artist from Vicenza Roberto Dal Bosco has projected his video tribute to this masterpiece, its shapes, and its story of hope and salvation. Dal Bosco has digitally reproduced the entire artwork at a very high resolution and recreated virtually the space of the painting. Then, using computer graphics to animate the work of art. His installation has also been on display for almost one year in Utah at “The Leonardo”, with 230.000 visitors. “The Supper of St Gregory the Great” can be seen every day with free access. See the Dubrovnik Tourist Board here. FROM VICENZA / AVIANO TO DUBROVNIK BY CAR: In the Dubrovnik old city there’s a small GoT fan shop with a replica of the Iron throne (you have to buy something to make picture on the Iron Throne). In the Lokrum Island (an easy day trip from Dubrovnik lying only 680 meters offshore, a 20-minute boat ride) at the Lokrum Visitor Centre there’s an official HBO Game of Thrones little expo center where you get your chance to sit on the original Iron Throne (apparently donated by HBO)! Ride to go far, to look around you, to have a story to tell. This is the philosophy that brings together BAM!’s bike travelers, the European meeting of bike travelers, and the third edition is back at the evocative Rocca di Noale, Venice, from the 19th to the 21st of May. The weight of the bike you come with doesn’t matter if you will sleep in tents, sharing with others a roof of stars, or if you choose a more comfortable accommodation. What really matters is too meet, once a year, and to share projects and stories. There will be many appointments on two wheels: workshops dedicated to mechanics, bikepacking, self-building, photography from the saddle and the recipes to do on the road. Then book presentations, movies, concerts and shows. But also a fun competition dedicated to Brompton (the famous foldable English bicycles), to see who can fold it faster, a bikepolo tournament and a night ride with breakfast at dawn. The large expo area will be devoted to the most famous brands, with their products dedicated to traveling, but also to small producers, bike craftsmen, associations and territorial realities who work in this field: a chance to see what’s new and […] MoreTweet

We refer to a small nanotechnology device that combines, light therapy and acupuncture. It contains nanocrystals that convert heat from the body into light. This light is sent into specific acupuncture points on the body, which helps it “remember” how to naturally communicate with the rest of the body. This leads to lots of health benefits, from better balance and posture to better sleep, focus, athletic performance, pain relief and more. Wearing this patch allows to maintain postural balance in the long term. It integrates with orthodontic treatments performed with fixed or removable appliances, or with bioactivators, and with gnathological devices such as the bite. The power of light Scientific evidence confirms that the exposure of a body to light energy is healthy for the organism. The light allows to reduce stress and the response of the endocrine system, by regulating hormonal and biological rhythms. It positively affects joint mobility, metabolism and regulates the sleep-wake rhythm. The light also allows to stimulate the production of vitamin D that is essential for human health, for the calcification of bones, growth, immune defenses, the prevention of chronic, degenerative and neurological diseases. Light is an indispensable source of nourishment and regulation of all […] MoreTweet
For those of you unfamiliar with the charming city of Padova (or Padua in English), you’re in for a delight. The lively and vibrant university town is only 45 kilometres from Vicenza and makes for the perfect day trip. This overview will highlight everything you need to know about Padova and a little more. I’ve lived in Padova for nearly four years now, and still to this day I can turn a corner and be taken away by it’s beauty. I guess that’s one of the many perks of living in this bel paese. Something in which, I’m sure Vicenza does to many of you on a daily basis as well. So what can I share with you about Padova to convince you to come and visit? Well for starters, Padova is home to one of the oldest universities in Italy, the largest piazza in the country and the oldest botanical gardens in the world. How about that for a wrap? Did I also mention that Galileo was also a professor at the University? Aside from that though, Padova is a bustling mix of university students, businessmen and surprisingly, quite a lot of expats as well. Summers can be quiet as everyone has flocked […] MoreTweet
Called “the Montursium” in ancient times, the toponym derives either from “mount”, from its Roman name “Ursius”, or from the name of the noble Orso (belonging to the ancient family of Trissino), who had probably built the castle of Fratta hill – now the cemetery. This is, therefore, the origin of the name “Castrum Montis Ursi” from which the actual Montorso came. In this quaint little town, you will find the splendid Villa Da Porto-Barbaran. The construction of the Palladian style villa started in 1662 and finished in 1724. In its early days, it boasted a large collection of paintings, antique furniture, and a beautiful garden full of magnificent sculptures. Very little is left from the former grandeur. Near the villa you can still see a tower and colonnade that date back to the 16th century, when there stood another abode, that of Luigi Da Porto. Who is Luigi da Porto? Luigi da Porto (1485 – 1529) was an Italian soldier, poet, and a writer born in Vicenza. He was severely wounded in battle, forcing him to end his stint in the military and retire in Montorso Vicentino. Villa Da Porto in Montorso is where Luigi penned the love story […] MoreTweet
So, you’re thinking of heading to Venice for the day? You’ve got friends or family in town or maybe it’s your first time visiting! This is a great day trip, especially from Vicenza, and with the detailed information below, you’ll be well on your way to seeing the best parts of Venice, Murano, and Burano! Getting to Venice There are a couple different ways to get to Venice. You can drive and park in a parking garage, but be prepared to pay a hefty day-fee. Tronchetto is a well-known car park that charges 21€ and from there, you can take the people mover over to Venice for 3€ per person, round trip. Another option, if you are a military ID holder, is to take the free shuttle to the airport, and then take a water taxi from the airport to Venice. However, the best and most affordable option is via train. If you’ve never taken the train in Italy before, no worries! It can seem overwhelming at first, but I promise it’s pretty simple to figure out. If you’re looking for a specific time to leave the Vicenza Train Station (Stazione Fs Vicenza), the Trenitalia website or app is a good […] MoreTweet
After living in Costabissara, Vicenza Italy for the past year, I know most of the restaurants in our town pretty well. I like to think that we have one of the best varieties of cuisine and I’m actually quite impressed with the diversity that our small community on the outskirts of downtown Vicenza has. We have everything from a Mexican restaurant to an American style street bar… on top of many fine Italian restaurants. Sometimes you just need a break from all the pasta, wine & bread (shock) and you want something that reminds you of home. If only we had a Chick-fil-A…but these places do a pretty good job of providing some great “American” style food that will leave your belly full and heart happy! To help those moving to Costabissara, those that currently live here, or just anyone wanting to get out and try something new, I’ve put together a list of all the restaurants that I have personally tried and recommend, some of my favorite dishes, and information on hours and other helpful tips! I hope you enjoy and please keep in mind these are my personal opinions so if you don’t favor the restaurant, it’s totally […] MoreTweet
Lucia of Syracuse (283–304), also known as Saint Lucy, or Saint Lucia (Italian: Santa Lucia), was a young Christian martyr who died during the Diocletianic Persecution. In medieval accounts, Saint Lucy’s eyes are gouged out prior to her execution. She is the patroness of Syracuse in Sicily, Italy, celebrated on December the 13th, Saint Lucy’s day. A special devotion to St. Lucy is practiced also in Verona and other Italian cities. “Santa Lucia is coming” is a a very popular and old tradition in Verona. People of all the Verona province are involved in this event! The legend tells that in the XIII century in Verona there was a terrible epidemic of “eyes ache”, especially for kids. People decided to ask for the grace of S. Lucia, with a barefoot pilgrimage up to S. Agnese Church, in the centre of the town (now Barbieri Palace). Kids didn’t want to do that, so parents promised them they will receive many presents from the Saint. Kids accepted and the epidemic ended. Still today, in the night between 12th and 13th of December, kids in Verona wait for S. Lucia, who bring them presents riding a flying donkey. Verona town celebrates the day […] MoreTweet
