Town Markets in and around Vicenza

In Italy there are three main types of “Open Market”:

  • Mercato settimanale or mercato rionale: Town Market.
  • Mercato degli agricoltori or mercato dei contadini or again mercato di campagna amica: Farmers Market
  • Mercatino dell’antiquariato: Antique Market

This post focuses on the mercati settimanali weekly town markets.

“Trade” in public areas has been a living and consolidated reality for centuries throughout Italy. Over the years, in addition to the markets of the oldest traditions, more have been added to squares and other places of aggregation as well as in fractions or in smaller towns.

These markets also represent a significant moment of social life, relationship and contact between the locals, often contributing to the enhancement and redevelopment of abandoned areas or degraded neighborhoods.

Town markets usual hours are about 0830-1230. Vendors sell food (mainly fresh / local fruits and vegetables) home goods, and clothing.
