In the hills of Colli Berici sits La Pria Organic Winery with architecture dating back to the 15th century. Here in the town of Alonte, you’ll find a winery ready to cater to all your wine and horseback riding preferences. With a rustic, yet Roman feel to the place, you’ll want to return time and time again to sip on one of their fine Prosecco DOCs under the ancient barn, or lounge about the pool in the summertime before heading off for a ride on horseback through the vineyards.
Our visit to La Pria Winery was handled by Rino, whose knowledge for the wine business and attention to detail sets this winery apart from others. Rino, co-owner of the winery, is very involved in the town, wine marketing, and even came up with the idea for the brochure, that resembles a passport, containing information about the winery and a tasting guide (available in English!).
The first thing you’ll notice upon entering the gates and parking in the winery is the large barn. Referred to as barchessa, this ancient barn dates back to the 15th century. It houses the wine tastings, rooms, and wine shop, along with a pool to the side that is open during the summertime. The architecture of the barn is incredible. If you look closely on the columns, you’ll see writing from many years ago detailing about the weather and war. It’s especially fascinating!
La Pria is a place where you can come and relax, enjoy a glass of wine, or have a get together with your friends. There are many spaces where you can sit and sip – underneath the barn roof if it’s raining, inside the tasting room, or out in the garden by the pool. To enjoy a wine tasting, it is not required that you make a reservation (Tuesday to Friday 9:00am – 1:00pm, Saturday 9:00am – 5:00pm). However, for more than 5 people, it is advised to call ahead. If you would like more than just the simple bread and treats during your tasting, it is also recommended to call, and they will provide local raw ham or salami and cheeses for you and your guests. If you would like something other than the above to eat, like pizza or pies, don’t hesitate to ask and they will do everything they can to accommodate your group. You can try 3 wines for 15€.
Inside the meeting and tasting room, a short video illustrates La Pria’s facility and their concept of the winery. It’s an interesting video and well done by the production team about the history of their family. The video is in Italian but has English subtitles. If you’re interested in touring the grounds, you should make a reservation and they can explain the different packages available.
La Pria’s Wine Selection
La Pria is an entirely organic winery, meaning that they use treatments with no chemicals – only with copper sulfate and sulfur as fungicides. Their Proseccos are good to stock up to 2 years. In fact, during our tasting, we tried the 2017 Brut Prosecco and it was just as wonderful as a newer bottle. I really enjoyed their Prosecco options and found them to be of excellent quality. As for their total wine selection as of the time of this writing, they have the following available:
- Prosecco DOC – Brut 0.5, Brut, Extra Dry
- Bianco Veneto IGT – Il Vespiere, Camillo
- Rosso Veneto IGT – Bugamante
- Rosato Veneto IGT – Ramato
After your tasting, head over to the wine shop to make your purchases – maybe throw in a delicious Extra Virgin olive oil too! For convenience, they accept credit cards and cash.
Just across the street lies the Trevisan Ranch / Boston Club Alonte where you’ll find a Western Style riding school for all ages. They can organize riding around the winery, or riding lessons. There are 60 horses in total, all absolutely beautiful. Trevisan Ranch is one of the biggest ranches in Veneto, according to Rino. Inside the riding arena, they provide lessons, also available in English, and once a year a horse festival similar to rodeo. The barn and riding ring sit among the vineyards and newly planted olive trees.
